The last I heard of my friend Fanaa, she had returned to the coordinates of her birth.

In those days, the women had left the zenana by the thousands, burning with love and rage for the humiliations wrought upon their sons and daughters.

They flowed into the streets, strings of spilled pearls, tasbihs undone. They flowed into the streets, showers of stones softened through centuries.

Soon after, the earth folded unto itself, in the age of a great and uneasy quietude.

Her last words I heard:
This is a world where everything is visible, yet nothing is seen.
